Photo-text editing in process, critics are welcome
Hey everyone! Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my previous two posts, I really appreciate. I will put these posts back to draft now, they are kind of out of context (and very ugly
) among these other photos.
At first I really didn’t think I would ever consider designing these postcards myself, but somehow Janine convinced me to try. And thanks for the idea to use my own photos, it makes sense now. Also the thought of cutting up text has helped me a lot to go further. Only I suck at handicrafts, so instead of copying and pasting everything in real life, I did it in Photoshop. I also didn’t try to do anything with the background yet.
So here is my next step in going further with this idea. What do you think? Should there be more or less photos put together? Should it be more/less organized? What about the font this time? Is it easy to follow the story or do you get lost between the cubes? Any ideas are still more than welcome.
Thank you all for your help, this editing in public is actually pretty much fun.
Berit

Hey Berit, this so cool! really liked the first one! other are great as well.. This is really interesting!
I’m glad you like it. I’m still working on the concept and kinda new in photoshop, so I have no idea where this will end up. But let’s see. Any ideas are more than welcome.
will surely give a thought in the weekend!!
cool, thanks. but the weekend’s gonna be over soon
this is really nice – The flow of the text works well – especially the first one.
the second one the text is a little clumsy (box 2,3, 4 dont lead your eye in the right way – the others are fine), but the collage looks great especially the warm nude in the foreground with this cool blue in the background
no. 3 isn’t working quite right yet it looks like a wip
this is a website made by this artist that uses a lot of collage – might inspire you
http://www.thandiswa.com/
btw – even if you dont want to do collage you can simulate it digitally
e.g. scan blanks pieces of paper, cut them out and then overlay text on them
font for 2 – try a sans serif
font for 3 – works as a serif (it has a vintage feel)
Also i think visually no. 2 – just re-read the story
that is perfect – the visual. just need to tweak how the text is laid out.
Wow, your comments are so helpful. It’s like doing an online course
So to conclude, number 1 is kinda fine; I should check the text and positioning of text on 2. And I’ll need to find a native speaker to check all my texts eventually anyway.
But the third? What disturbs you more, the story (too long and specific comparing to the others?) or the visual? I like the 2/3 of the upper part of the visual, maybe the lower overlay is a bit shitty. Or I have put together too many things?
I’ll leave these cards for a few days now to see them with the new eye later and try to start a next one. I’m sure if I continue doing them, eventually I’ll get it what works better. But damn, your advice is like a piece of gold here.
I like crits
we used to do them in school. Sometimes they are hard but useful
i think you are right – leave it for a bit then look at it again and have a play around
another trick i’ve learned is to look at your work in a mirror – esp if you have been looking at it a while
for 1. – its good –
looking at it again – my eye is drawn to the wall in the photo and the text on there more than the story text
maybe the brown font matches the background too well? not sure. try playing around. but i like the way the text is arranged – that works
2. i think is my fav, both text and the image collage
Text layout move around – those 3 boxes
you can also edit more text – so its almost like a poem.
box 1 – i only need to know its indonesia I think – cull more text as it seems out of context at this point in the edit
what i mean is tell us only what is relevant because space is so important on these postcards and so limited
3. the long thin chunk of text doesn’t work right to start with
no hyphens – apparently this is not good in design (i only learned this on the job)
the collage is not ready – the soft blurry edges dont work on the image cut outs
i would try and make the digital collage look more like a real one
so use the pen tool to create outlines over the image, add tiny drop shadows so it looks like paper – paste over each other – look up photoshop tutorials for this online. it will be better than me trying to explain badly
feel free to give me crits back if you like. i always post work, feedback is always welcome
now
back to work
Everything you say is so true. I wish I reached the point where I could see these details myself. I put them on hold for a week or so and will later edit, your comments as a guideline.
And you’re right, I’m more often silent observer. Should make more noise. GRR. Like this.
Actually this Indonesian internet is not too cool, takes me ages to open pages, download pics and all the rest. Need time. But it will change soon.
I like these! The text is against a semi-transparent background, which does not detract from the collage. Colors blend well, I love that you stayed true to the collage colors for the text boxes, something I will remember the next time I need to do something like this with my own images.
Thank you for your comment! It makes me feel good when someone likes what I’ve done, as I’m not too sure yet what exactly I’m doing
The fun is in the learning!
